Tea Party focus: Local elections

We all remember last September when the Tea Party movement converged on Washington DC to voice their concerns over a broad range of issues from out-of-control spending to Obamacare.  Hundreds of thousands of average Americans, many for the first time exercised their constitutional right to peaceably assemble.  Their focus was a national focus and they indeed sent Washington DC a message; a message that was ignored.

Almost one year later, Obamacare has been rammed through against the wishes of the majority of Americans.  Congress and this administration has doubled down with spending, forcing them to raise the debt ceiling again and again.  Cap and Trade is still under consideration while at the same time the EPA has been given the green light to enforce carbon emissions regulations.  Arizona is under fire for passing a law that enforces federal immigration laws and now just yesterday the government filed a lawsuit to block the law’s implementation.  Unemployment is still close to 10 percent and there is talk of a depression around the corner.  There is an uneasy feeling in the Republic.  Frustration, anger, helplessness, and division are latching onto the hearts and minds of many.  In my lifetime I have never seen us so deeply divided.  We no longer care to have an honest debate over the issues because each side is entrenched.  It feels as if everything is beginning to come undone.

Many of you know that I’m a huge supporter of states’ rights.  I believe the answers we seek can be found in our respective states.  The states hold the ultimate trump card over the federal government; the 10th amendment.  A wise person once told me that we create our own prison and that is exactly what I think we have done on a state level.  States have failed their citizens by abdicating their responsibilities to a distant and out of touch federal government.  They have failed to control their spending forcing them into a self-imposed dependency on the federal government.  Additionally the citizens have failed their states by not recognizing the importance of local elections.  Washington is corrupt and broken, and this November the possibility is very real that we will be replacing one set of power hungry elitists for another that simply said the things we wanted to hear to get elected.  This is why I suggested months ago that those associated with the Tea Party movement should concentrate a portion of their efforts on local politics.

We need to get the right players in place on the state level if we hope to check an out of control government that imposes draconian regulations and unconstitutional laws on us.  When I say right players, I mean people who are grounded in the Constitution and the free market system.  We need to treat local elections with the same importance and attention we give national elections.  This means doing our home work and supporting candidates who stand with our Constitution and understand the limitations placed on the federal government by the Constitution.  This is where I believe Tea Party groups can have a huge impact by supporting candidates that are willing to support and defend the Constitution and believe that the states are equal partners and not subservient to the federal government.

It all starts and ends with the states.  I believe the states will play an instrumental role in saving the Republic. They must!

Liberty forever, freedom forever
